SUMMARY: The preunitarian events in the District of Nola (southern Italy). This essay looks at the events occurred between May 15, 1948 and the Unification of Italy, in the District of Nola, through the analysis of documents from Caserta’s Historical Archive and the fund Alta Polizia di Terra di Lavoro. This documents relate the Bourbons’s repressive actions against those citizens suspected of liberal ideas. The report begins with the occurrences of May 1848 and ends with the Plebiscite of October 21, 1860. Necessary attention is also given to the brigandage events which animated the beginning of the post-unification period in Nola. The essay includes also a correspondence, that was never published before, related to workers’ demonstrations against low wages in local pasta factories and to documents of the political police on foreign political activists who travelled through the Kingdom, and in particular, among them, the philosopher Antonio Rosmini Serbati. Reading these documents has made possible a reconstruction of the Abbot’s short stay in Caserta, at the Convent of the PP.

SUMMARY: Innocenzo Sarappa, Garibaldian priest of Roccarainola (Southern Italy). Born in Roccarainola in 1821 into a peasant family, Innocenzo Sarappa became an Augustinian fray and practiced his priestly mission in the convents of his order. In 1860, he was appointed, by order of Dictator Garibaldi, rector to the former Seminary of Matera, reopen as a boarding school for student of high school other than seminarians. In 1862 he was one of the first priests, in whole Italy, in subscribing a petition requesting from Pope Pius IX to renounce the temporal power of the Church. In 1866, he suffered the consequences of the suppression of the religious orders in Italy and had to return to his home in Roccarainola as a simple secular priest and teacher. In his hometown, for more than ten years, he was a town councilor and even a township mayor. Because of unknown reasons, he was suspended a divinis before 1878 and was still in that state up to 1892. Perhaps he was readmitted after that year to the full priestly function, such as it seems deduced from his parish book of deceased. He passed away in 1904, leaving a strong remembrance as a genuine Garibaldian. Few years after his death, the street of Roccarainola where he was born and dead, was named after him.

SUMMARY: The 1748 “Catasto Onciario” of Sirico (Southern Italy). Among the numerous hamlets of Nola, which became definitively selfgoverning municipalities during the French Decade, Sirico is the first whose 1748 Catasto Onciario is published here integrally. This manuscript, kept at the State Archive in Naples, provides a thorough picture of the economic and demographic situation of Sirico’s population in those years. This picture was organized on the basis of 52 families of resident people, with a population of 396 inhabitants, made up essentially of “farm labourers” and few “notables”. However, the picture of economic people, that is owners and professionals, included strangers (resident or not), priests, clerical bodies and other minor groups. Among the various topics, topographical and toponymic data are remarkable. Thanks to its intrinsic value, this work can be rightfully considered one of the primary historical sources on the Nolan District.

SUMMARY: The Fisia S[- - -] evergetisme and of his son M. Staius Cosmus in a latin inscription from the II century. A.D. by Roccarainola. Brief notes on CIL IX 1169. Is proposed a new interpretation of CIL IX 1169, generally attributed to Aeclanum but there are no documents that confirm the origin to the ancient town. Is now suggested as ancient origin of the two lintel fragments,gv the nearest town of Nola or alternatively Abella, where it seems most probable location of the original monumental inscription, moved at a time not clear Roccarainola and reused in a small church dedicated to S. Maria del Pianto. The epigraph is a case of evergetisme, beautification of the city market with marbles, macellum, willing to bequest for of the town, by M. Staius Cosmus, a freedman, and completed by his mother and heir Fisia S[- - -], freedwoman of a distinguished family of the ancient Nola, who arrived at the consulate under Domitian. The expression “suppleta vicesima consummavit” testifies to the generosity of Fisia adding a sum of money to complete the work required by her son to whom he dedicated a statue to honor his memory in a schola which was placed on this lintel. The inscription can be dated to the mid-second century. A.D. still Hadrian-Antonine.
